We've seen him
gloomy, a bit too serious or just grave enough to be the stuck-up fiancé
of Bridget Jones or the painter, Vermeer, revealed by his model in Girl With a Pearl Earring. For Nanny McPhee, change costume and
mood, Colin Firth is Mr Brown, a harried widower and clumsy father,
victim of his seven children's rowdiness, and a man in search of money
and happiness who is looking for a new wife. A caricatured role which
he accepted as a change of pace and as a favor. "The first attraction
was to shoot with Emma Thompson. The second was to make a movie for
children. As an actor, we often tend to take ourselves too seriously
and forget that we are first and foremost storytellers. I had been
waiting for this kind of role for 20 years!"
Shirt outside his jeans, messed-up hair, Colin Firth certainly has the
looks of a relaxed man who is taking a quick breath of Parisian air
before leaving again. As well as that of an actor who has discovered
another way to work with children.
Cream Pie Fight
"What's wonderful about them is that they easily believe in things. We,
we are more skeptical and less ingenuous. On the set, they didn't form
a scheming gang, which would have turned into a nightmare. The oldest
at 14 couldn't really conspire with the little one of 6 years old. Most
of the time, it was like they studied during set ups and took turns
playing two by two."
In a barely noticeable but great deception, it's not always the real
children who act opposite the adults as the actor reveals with a
mischievious smile. "Since the law forbids children to work long hours,
after 16 hours on the set, we also acted with adult stand-ins who were
the kids' sizes, the same ones who worked on Harry Potter. A child
would act for 20 minutes then have to stop. The difficulty for us was
the anxiety of such short timeframes. The child was always great,
and me, I was afraid to make a mistake, which would have ruined the
shot."
In real life, as the father of three children aged 15, 4 and 2, Colin
Firth remains however cautious of their ability to believe what they
see. "The youngest ones do not know that I'm an actor. A friend of my
4-year-old saw the movie and when he saw me, he burst into tears seeing
me as a lonely man and a widower... So I'm in no hurry to show them the
movie." Nonetheless, he has been surprised at the reaction of the other
children to the cream pie fight. "I was sure this old-fashioned
sequence would not be funny. Still, all the children enjoy it. On the
set, we did too! It was in fact Kirk Jones, the director, who was
throwing pies, squarely at my face. One way to take revenge on the main
actor!"
Happily those memories of children have not really
left Colin Firth, since in the movie he just finished, The Last Legion, where he plays an
aging hero alongside Ben Kingsley, he found himself again with the
young Thomas Sangster, who plays the oldest in the band of rambunctious
kids. The little story does not say whether the shoot ended once again
in a cream pie fight.

On
